I beat the heat with a pre-sunrise run this week, starting a little after 5. My runs in the neighborhood always have a leg taking me to the boat landing. The pier head provides a fine platform for stretching and observing, though on this morning it was still perhaps thirty minutes before the sunrise. In the quiet of the morning I said a prayer to family living and deceased. In response I heard the resonant sound of an exhalation right off the pier head, and as I looked expected to see the dolphin’s body submerge. But this marine animal was not swimming like a dolphin, and hung out in the same place on the surface. The oval body of this loggerhead finally submerged, and I marveled once again at being so close to a member of this endangered species.
